120 Birds at the Street Theatre
Saturday 19th May 2012 @ 7.30pm & Sunday 20th May 2012 @ 4pm
The Street Theatre, 15 Childers St, Canberra City West

Four GOLD performers will join the cast along with the Burlesque class into a foray into dance history in the 1920's and 30's. Inspired by Anna Pavlova, Annette Kellerman and the bondi beach lifesavers, this work is backed by archival film from the National Film and Sound Archive and images form the National Gallery of Australia images of the Ballet Russes.
Mixing live performance with fascinating vintage film footage, 120 BIRDS is a new work based around the quirks of international touring of 1920s dance artists. Company Elle is born in Australia in 1923 after Anna Pavlova first visits the country. Madam Lou raises and drags her company of four on globe-trotting adventures following Pavlova’s footsteps and meeting other companies like Denishawn and celebrities such as the enigmatic designer Florence Broadhurst, professional swimmer turned film star Annette Kellerman and the Australia cricket team.
This tribute to ballet star Anna Pavlova is a five star show …. Lea is a true performer with real stage presence, turning her very able hands to acting, dancing, direction, choreography, costume design and writing. As the audience filed out post-show, one word kept coming up time and again-FABULOUS-undeniably the perfect adjective. EDINBURGH FESTIVALS
In 120 BIRDS the cast of four recreate both the brutal toughness and the exhilarating glamour of a ballet company out on the road, mixing live performance with vintage film footage. THE GUARDIAN
